The structure of vegetation (as grassland, open woodland, woodland, etc) is of importance for fauna abundance, wildlife movements, and bushfire behaviour. This data product, the Canberra Vegetation Structure Map (CVSM), maps the structure of vegetation in and surrounding the city of Canberra using definitions compatible with the ACT Strategies for woodlands (ACT Government 2004) and native grasslands (ACT Government 2005), and the National Vegetation Inventory System (ESCAVI 2003). The resulting map has classified the vegetation of Canberra into eleven vegetation structure classes, each with an explicit definition outlined in Technical Report 33 (see citation). The area of mapped vegetation is 723 sq km. The classification was based mainly on percentage tree canopy cover. Mapping was completed in 2012.Citation: Wimpenny, C., Howland, B. and Fletcher, D. (2015). A simple but useful map of vegetation structure in and near Canberra. Technical Report 33. Environment and Planning Directorate, ACT Government, Canberra.Use limitations:This data product is recommended for use between 1:10,000 and 1:50,000 scale resolution. The limitations of the map become more evident at any scale more detailed than approximately 1:12,000. Areas of <3ha were deemed to be below the resolution of this map with the exception of narrow vegetated corridors between areas of urban development. The mapping is current to 2012. Newer urban areas of Canberra since 2012 (e.g. Moncrief, Crace and Casey) have not been re-classified in this product.More sophisticated mapping of ACT vegetation was commenced later by the Environment and Planning Directorate (Baines et al 2013 – ACT Vegetation Map 2015). This new mapping is based on vegetation communities and may not meet a need for vegetation structure mapping. The availability of LIDAR imagery in 2016< may enable far superior mapping of vegetation structure than presented here. Creative Common By Attribution 4.0 (Australian Capital Territory), Please read Data Terms and Conditions statement before  data use.
